Candy Math

This is a great way to learn Math. In honor of Valentines Day, we are using Sweethearts for our Math lesson. I have 10 hearts of each color in the box. These are some of the things we did.

1. We made a graph of the colors in the bag ( Our bag had mostly purple and only a few greens).
2. I called out colors and he matched it to the same color.
3. Fine motor skills by putting candy hearts in small heart shape.
4. He made color patterns I called out and made some on his own.
5. Count out - If I called out 5, he would count out 5 Sweethearts.

Crabby Calculations

You really can turn any situation into a learning adventure and your kids won't even know it. We went crabbing this past summer. It was a lot more rewarding than our fishing or our not catching anything try. We had the nets and strings and tied some chicken on it. Then, tied it to the dock and threw them in. Everyone could take turns reeling in the string. Our goal was to have enough for dinner that night. Then a kid would pull in a string and would say, "I got one". We could only keep them if they were 5" long, so we pulled out the ruler. My little guy would  measure from point to point and let us know if it was a keeper. We ended up with 18 crabs and a sneaky little math lesson.
